The first exponent of the heliocentric theory , after the ancient Greeks , and astrologer of the 16th century Nicolaus Copernicus like today in 1543 inconspicuous died before he could see his work “On the rotation of the Heavenly Spheres ” be issued , a project for which the Church declared him a heretic .
Five centuries after his death, in 2008 ,he was buried up again with honors of a hero at the Cathedral of Frompork in Poland.Copernicus in his book «De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium Libri VI» («Six Books on the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres”) supported the heliocentric theory, the view that the Earth and other bodies in the solar system revolve around the Sun, in unlike the then official geocentric theory, which wanted the real Earth still and the center of the world.
Essentially presents the modification of the theory of Ptolemy for a moving Earth. In the model presented, the universe consists of 8 concentric spheres. The outermost eighth sphere ,was again the sphere of fixed stars ,but now the sun is motionless at the center. The six known at the time of Copernicus planets orbiting the Sun in the order we know today, while the Moon orbits the Earth.
Furthermore, the apparent movement of the sun and fixed stars around the Earth can be explained by the daily rotation of the Earth around its axis. Copernicus, however, as shown by following Aristarchus, did not dare to abandon the circular orbits (the true orbits of the planets are elliptical), making it necessary to maintain the epicycles of Ptolemy. The work of Copernicus was the basis for the development of modern astronomy and paved the way for the next generation of astronomers, including Kepler and Galileo and the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century. Moreover, the title of the project still was itself a historic influence, provided the Latin name revolution (rotation procession) in any sudden and fundamental change in thinking or in society (revolution = revolution).
Copernicus was born in 1473 in Torun, Poland, and spent much of his adult life in the Frompork Varma, province of Poland. He died in 1543 almost unknown before his radical conception make the Roman Catholic Church to condemn him as a heretic. His tomb was unknown until 2008 when his bones discovered in 2010 he was buried again as a hero a hero by the Church.
